You Got Gilmore’d
Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite TV shows ever. I blame this show for being the primary motivator of my junk food habit. Besides the banquets (Friday night dinners, ordering Chinese, Luke’s, Sooki’s cooking) that are in every other episode, another thing I love about this show is the fashion. I am especially taken with some of Lorelai’s outfits. She follows the philosophy of late 90s/early 2000s fashion, which is to put together an outfit so bad it becomes good.
I think I may have worn a bucket hat once, when I was young enough to be innocent of all fashion faux pas (Lorelai rekt). In all seriousness, these sartorial “misses” are what make me such a fan. I love the cheesy, dated look Lorelai’s outfits have. They were truly something you could only pull off in the 2000s – pom poms, lettuce edged sleeves, layering tank tops on top of shirts, and shrugs (forgot about these didn’t you). On a side note, has anyone else noticed how ubiquitously skinny jeans have replaced flared jeans? This is true at least for the college crowd. The one time a girl walked by me on campus wearing flared jeans my body had to mentally stop and process it. Flare jeans are totally going to make a come back though. I know because I recently got myself a pair of bellbottoms (say what). Anyways, inspired by Lorelai, I decided to rummage through old clothes worn during my early teenage years to see how far I, along with the rest of society, have come.
This last image, for some reason, reminds me a lot of the music video for “1979” by the Smashing Pumpkins. That song never fails to give me a heady dose of nostalgia for something I can’t put my finger on. Here’s some random Gilmore Girls trivia: Rory doesn’t like the Smashing Pumpkins, but Lane does. I don’t remember why. And yes those are just pajamas haha.
I should clarify that while I haven’t worn these particular outfits out, I have worn each of these pieces by themselves in some fashion. By the way I may have come dangerously close to wearing the yellow sweater layered with the checkered dress before. I definitely wore that studded choker a lot in high school. -__-
Do you identify with Gilmore Girls fashion? Which dated trends would you still wear right now? Leave a comment below! I’m excited to bring bellbottoms back.

I’ve never watched the show, but your post has convinced me I need to check it out! I am also guilty of wearing skinny jeans all day errday, but I have slowly incorporated a good flare jean back into the wardrobe.
