Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Like mother, like daughter.

Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite TV shows ever. I blame this show for being the primary motivator of my junk food habit. Besides the banquets (Friday night dinners, ordering Chinese, Luke’s, Sooki’s cooking) that are in every other episode, another thing I love about this show is the fashion. I am especially taken with some of Lorelai’s outfits. She follows the philosophy of late 90s/early 2000s fashion, which is to put together an outfit so bad it becomes good.

I think I may have worn a bucket hat once, when I was young enough to be innocent of all fashion faux pas (Lorelai rekt). In all seriousness, these sartorial “misses” are what make me such a fan. I love the cheesy, dated look Lorelai’s outfits have. They were truly something you could only pull off in the 2000s – pom poms, lettuce edged sleeves, layering tank tops on top of shirts, and shrugs (forgot about these didn’t you). On a side note, has anyone else noticed how ubiquitously skinny jeans have replaced flared jeans? This is true at least for the college crowd. The one time a girl walked by me on campus wearing flared jeans my body had to mentally stop and process it. Flare jeans are totally going to make a come back though. I know because I recently got myself a pair of bellbottoms (say what). Anyways, inspired by Lorelai, I decided to rummage through old clothes worn during my early teenage years to see how far I, along with the rest of society, have come.

This last image, for some reason, reminds me a lot of the music video for “1979” by the Smashing Pumpkins. That song never fails to give me a heady dose of nostalgia for something I can’t put my finger on. Here’s some random Gilmore Girls trivia: Rory doesn’t like the Smashing Pumpkins, but Lane does. I don’t remember why. And yes those are just pajamas haha.

I should clarify that while I haven’t worn these particular outfits out, I have worn each of these pieces by themselves in some fashion. By the way I may have come dangerously close to wearing the yellow sweater layered with the checkered dress before. I definitely wore that studded choker a lot in high school. -__-

Do you identify with Gilmore Girls fashion? Which dated trends would you still wear right now? Leave a comment below! I’m excited to bring bellbottoms back.

This is a dress my Mom apparently used to wear back in the day. I say apparently because her style has mellowed out a lot since then, and I can’t believe she even owns this. Nowadays she is very Ann Taylor. This dress is the opposite of Ann Taylor. The print reminds me of eyeballs, or cells undergoing mitosis. It’s a bit small on me now, which I’m sad about since it seems to be a vintage one of a kind piece from China.

I had the story of a languishing suburban housewife in mind as I shot this. The isolation and emptiness of the room reminded me of the film Requiem for a Dream. One of the characters from that will be the inspiration for my next shoot. Any guesses as to who she is?

Just a poor farm girl digging at non-existent holes in the ground. I was clearly very productive with my time.

Couldn’t resist taking advantage of the cloudy weather in San Diego today to take some photos. It was actually still too hot to wear this outfit but I wanted to do a rainy day look since it was drizzling. Not that San Diegans know anything about dressing for rainy weather. *all the British people say Amen* I just googled U.K weather and found “Flood warning as parts of country see month’s worth of rain in just 48 hours”. 0_0 Hi U.K. if you don’t mind could you send some of those rain clouds our way we are slowly turning into an actual desert plz thanks.

Thrift Hauls

Nice to Meet You

Welcome to One Shaggy Dog! I want to make this a sort of journal / personal style record so I’ll start off with my last thrift store mini haul. This thrift took place after a bit of oral surgery. I had to go the dentists’ office to get a cavity filled. It wasn’t a big deal – my dentist just pulled a syringe out of nowhere and stabbed my cheek with it. It only took 20 minutes before I was walking out with a new filling. There was a Goodwill on the way back home, so me and my sister decided to indulge in some retail therapy while we were recovering from having our teeth drilled into. This is what I found on that trip.

Yes, the bananas are that iconic. Here is an artist’s illustration of Andy Warhol with bananas on his head.

I had declared my shopping finished when I found this dress hidden on the rack. First impression – WOW SUCH COLORS / DO I WANT? / WANTTT. My wardrobe has its fair share of color but the sheer brightness of this dress is beyond anything I have. My intelligent, reasonable younger sister, upon seeing what I found, rolls her eyes so far up north they reach Canada. I ignored her protests and headed to the dressing room. The sleeves were a bit small on my arms but the dress surprisingly fit. I struggled with justifying whether to get it or not, but it was too cool to pass up. I haven’t gotten to wear it out yet – still waiting for some sign from the universe to break it out. I think if I lived in a bustling place like NYC I would have no problem wearing something so flashy. The pace of life in San Diego is a lot slower. College students (including me) all dress like “The Dude” everyday in our pajamas and flip flops so this dress would stick out like a Maglite being shoved into your face.
